This week, during an appearance at a BAFTA event in London, Jon Hamm suggested that things haven’t always been platonic between the two Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce colleagues. Asked why Don has never made a pass at Joan, Hamm replied, “Who says he hasn’t?” Then he hinted that Mad Men‘s fifth season might explore the relationship between the two. “They have worked together for a long time,” he said. “They know one another very well, and I’ll leave it at that.”
Now, Hamm doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to hook up. Obviously, Don and Joan have shared some very intimate moments with their finely-tailored clothes still on. Remember when Don was waiting to hear if he won the Clio award, and he reached down to hold Joan’s hand? Remember when they waited at the hospital together (for the colleague who got run over by a lawnmower), and Don told Joan that he’d miss her, and that her husband was “lucky”? And Joan confided in him about her dark outlook on the world: “That’s life. One minute you’re on top of the world, the next minute some secretary’s running you over with a lawnmower”?

Somehow, I feel like a one-night stand between Joan and Don would
ruin the poignancy of those moments. Maybe I don’t want Joan to end up
like poor Faye.
Or maybe I’m still rooting for Joan to take Roger back. Or maybe, with
Don, everything’s just sexier when the tension’s so thick, you could use
it as pomade in his hair.Or maybe that’s just me? What do you guys think? Should they hook up? Or are they better off as friends?
