bernie-jack-blackIn 1997, Bernie Tiede, one of the most beloved citizens of the small Texas town of Carthage, was arrested for the murder of 81-year-old widow Marjorie Nugent. Bernie had befriended Marjorie at her husband’s funeral, and quickly became her companion and business manager. But when Marjorie disappeared, it was months before anyone figured something was up.
It sounds like wildly contrived fiction, but it’s all true. And it’s the subject of director Richard Linklater’s latest film, Bernie, starring Jack Black as Tiede, Shirley MacLaine as Marjorie, and Matthew McConaughey as the town’s D.A. determined to see justice prevail. The film is premiering next month at the SXSW Film Festival in Linklater’s home town of Austin before its April 27 release. Check out an exclusive first look at the poster below:
